What is Smoke Testing

To help keep your wastewater system running properly, Sleuth Leak Detection will be testing the sanitary sewer lines in your neighborhood using a process called smoke testing.

This test involves introducing safe, non-toxic white fog (referred to as “smoke”) into the sanitary system to identify any cracks, leaks, open connections, or other defects.

  • Non-toxic, odorless, and residue-free
  • Safe for people, pets, plants, and those using oxygen
  • No need to leave your home

What to Expect

  • You may see smoke coming from rooftop plumbing vents or the testing area — this is completely normal.
  • Smoke may also appear from yards, utility easements, or drain cleanouts — this could indicate a potential issue.
  • In rare cases, smoke may enter your home. This typically signals a dry drain trap, open or broken pipe, or loose plumbing connection.

What to Do Before Testing

  • Pour ½ gallon of water into all floor drains, unused sinks, tubs, showers, and toilets to fill the plumbing traps.
  • Close all toilet lids during testing to help reduce the chance of smoke entering the home.
  • Secure pets indoors in a well-ventilated area.
  • Testing typically occurs during regular business hours. You will receive a door hanger notice 24–72 hours before testing begins.

If Smoke Enters Your Home

  • Don’t panic. The smoke is non-toxic and will not harm you, your pets, or belongings.
  • Open windows f to ventilate the space.
  • Note where smoke appeared — this helps identify a possible defect.
  • Call the phone number on your notice to report the issue or ask questions.

Smoke entering your home may indicate a potential defect in your sanitary plumbing system. We recommend having a licensed plumber inspect the area to address the issue.
